How the math works
Speed is distance over time. Step length is speed ÷ steps per second — if you cover 3.33 metres each second and take three steps in that second, each step moved you 1.11 metres. Stride length is simply twice the step length, because a stride is two steps.
Nothing here is modelled or fitted. Given an accurate distance, time and cadence, these three numbers are exactly right — the uncertainty is entirely in how well you counted.
Where the 180 rule actually comes from
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Jack Daniels counted the stride rates of distance runners and found that only one of the forty-six fell below 180 steps per minute. He reported it as an observation. It has since hardened into a rule that gets applied to every runner at every pace, which is considerably more than the original counting can support.
Two things get lost in the retelling. Those runners were racing, and cadence rises naturally with speed — your own easy-run cadence should be lower than your 5 K cadence. And they were elite, with the leg lengths and mechanics that go with that. A tall runner at an easy pace sitting in the 160s is not doing anything wrong.
Honest caveats
The arithmetic is exact and the inputs rarely are. Watch cadence is usually reliable; GPS distance is not, particularly on twisting or tree-covered routes, and any error in distance flows straight through into step length. Counting by hand while running is also harder than it sounds — expect a couple of steps of slop either way.
Cadence is worth knowing and rarely worth chasing. It changes with pace, fatigue, gradient and leg length, so a single number tells you little without the context of the run it came from. What is the difference between stride length and step length?+−
A step is one footfall to the next — left to right. A stride is a full gait cycle, left to left, so it is two steps. Watches almost always report cadence in steps per minute, which is why this calculator shows you both and labels which is which. Comparing someone’s stride length to someone else’s step length is a common way to confuse yourself.
Does a higher cadence prevent injury?+−
The evidence is mixed and more modest than the internet suggests. Increasing cadence does reduce load per step and tends to shorten overstriding, which is mechanically sensible. Whether that translates into fewer injuries across real runners over real seasons is not settled. Treat a cadence change as one adjustment worth trying under guidance, not as a cure.
How do I measure cadence without a watch?+−
Count every footfall — both feet — for thirty seconds while running at a steady effort, then double it. That is what the count mode here does. Count for a full thirty seconds rather than fifteen and doubling twice; the shorter the window, the more a couple of miscounted steps distort the answer.
