Boxing weight class calculator
Enter what you actually weigh and this tells you which division you belong to — across all seventeen professional classes or the Olympic categories. It will not tell you how to get into a lighter one, and the reason for that is on this page.
Your weight
Your division
Also called junior middleweight.
Welterweight caps at 147 lb — you are 3 lb over it.
It matches your everyday walking weight to a division, and stops there — on purpose. Rapid weight cutting has killed athletes: three collegiate wrestlers died in a single 1997 season, and a documented case in mixed martial arts ended in acute kidney injury. If you are considering dropping a division, that is a conversation for a physician and a registered dietitian who can see you, not a number on a web page. Fight where you walk. Medical disclaimer.

Bridgerweight (224 lb / 101.6 kg) is recognised only by the WBC. The WBA ran a version of it from December 2023 until scrapping the division in June 2026; the IBF and WBO never recognised it. It is not counted among the seventeen above.

How the divisions work
Professional boxing divides fighters into seventeen weight classes, and every one of them is defined in pounds — the kilogram figures you see are conversions of those limits, not the other way round. A division's name refers to its ceiling: welterweight means 147 lb and under, so a fighter at 144 lb and a fighter at 147 lb are both welterweights.
The four major sanctioning bodies — the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO — agree on those seventeen. They do not all agree on bridgerweight, which is why it appears here as a footnote rather than a division. Olympic boxing runs a separate, much shorter list defined in kilograms, and those categories are revised between games.
Walking weight versus weigh-in weight
These are two different numbers, and conflating them is where fighters get hurt. Your walking weight is what you carry day to day, trained and fed. Your weigh-in weight is what you present on the scale, and in professional boxing the weigh-in is typically the day before the fight — which is precisely what created the culture of extreme cutting. This calculator only ever uses the first number, because the second one is a decision that needs medical supervision rather than arithmetic.
Honest caveats
The lookup itself is exact — these are published limits, not estimates. What is not exact is the assumption that the division matching your weight is the division you should fight in. Frame, limb length, how much muscle you carry and how you recover all matter, and a coach who has watched you spar knows more about that than a table does.
If you are eating to change weight in either direction, do it with real numbers — the TDEE calculator gives you maintenance, and the macro split calculator turns that into protein, carbohydrate and fat. Neither is a substitute for professional advice; see the medical disclaimer.
Common questions
Which weight class am I really in?+−
The one your walking weight fits, not the one you could reach by dehydrating. Fighters are matched at a weigh-in, but they train, recover and compete at their everyday weight — so that is the number this tool takes. If you walk around at 150 lb, you are a super welterweight who could make welterweight with a sensible, supervised approach over months, not a welterweight who happens to be 3 lb heavy.
What is bridgerweight, and why is it listed separately?+−
Bridgerweight is a 224 lb class sitting between cruiserweight and heavyweight, created by the WBC in 2020. The WBA ran its own version — called super cruiserweight — from December 2023, but scrapped it effective 30 June 2026 and moved its champions back into cruiserweight and heavyweight. The IBF and WBO have never recognised it. So the WBC now stands alone, and listing it as an eighteenth division alongside the traditional seventeen would misrepresent how the sport is actually organised.
How do Olympic classes differ from professional ones?+−
They are defined in kilograms, there are far fewer of them, and they change. Paris 2024 ran seven men’s and six women’s categories. Amateur bouts are also three rounds rather than ten or twelve, so the weight-making culture is different. The categories for LA 2028 are expected to change again under World Boxing, which is why these are labelled by games rather than presented as permanent.
Why will this calculator not help me cut weight?+−
Because the honest answer to “how do I drop a division” is not a number. Rapid weight cutting killed three collegiate wrestlers in the 1997 season, and a documented case in mixed martial arts ended in acute kidney injury and relative energy deficiency. Making weight safely takes months of gradual change with a physician and a registered dietitian who can actually see you. A web page that hands you a target instead is doing you harm dressed as help.
Fight where you walk. Fuel it properly.
The Fuel Framework covers what combat athletes actually need to eat — and deliberately contains no acute weight-cutting protocol, for the reasons on this page.
