How the math works

The goal time is divided by the distance to get a rate, then multiplied back out across each segment. A 400 m in 52.00 seconds is 0.13 seconds per metre, so every 100 m segment is 13.00 seconds and the cumulative markers land at 13, 26, 39 and 52.

Sprint events are shown to hundredths of a second because that is how they are timed. Anything from 800 m up rounds to whole seconds, since nobody paces a middle-distance race to a hundredth and pretending otherwise would be false precision.

Honest caveats

The division is exact. What is not true is that you should run these numbers. Even splits are a planning baseline — they tell you what the average has to be, which is genuinely useful for judging whether a goal is realistic before you commit to it.

They are not a race model. Real races have an acceleration phase, a tactical middle and a fatigued end, and in the sprints the gap between an even split and a real one is enormous. Use these to sanity-check a target, then use the race predictor to see whether the target is consistent with what you have already run.

Common questions

Should my splits actually be even?+

From about 1500 m upward, close to even is how the fastest times get run. Below that it is impossible — you cannot accelerate instantly, so the first segment of any sprint is always the slowest and the middle is always the fastest. For a 400 m the opening 100 m and the closing 100 m are slower than the middle two for entirely different reasons: one is acceleration, the other is fatigue.

How should I pace a 400 or an 800?+

Not evenly, and not by chasing these numbers segment by segment. Both events are run with a fast, controlled first half and a hang-on second half — 400 m runners typically go through 200 m faster than their closing 200 m, and 800 m runners almost always positive-split. Use the even splits here as a reference for what the average has to be, then let your coach set the shape.

What is a negative split?+

Running the second half of a race faster than the first. It is a well-regarded approach for distance events because it protects against going out too hard, and several distance world records have been set that way. It is not achievable in sprints and rarely optimal in the 800 m.

Should I use lap markers or kilometre markers?+

Whatever the venue gives you. On a track, 400 m laps are what you can actually see, so the lap row is the useful one. On the road, kilometre or mile markers are what exist. The calculator offers the intervals that make sense for each event rather than forcing one scheme onto all of them.
