Plate loading calculator

Doing plate math between sets is where focus goes to die. Type the target weight, pick your bar, and see exactly what goes on each side — drawn out, heaviest plate first.

How it works

Subtract the bar from your target, halve what is left, then fill that per-side weight with the biggest plates first — exactly how you would load it at the rack. When the target does not divide evenly into standard plates, the calculator loads the closest weight below it and tells you the gap, so you can decide: round down and add a rep, or hunt for change plates.

Honest caveats

The calculator assumes a full standard plate set. Plenty of gyms are missing 2.5s, and bumper-only gyms often stop at 10 lb — so treat the breakdown as the ideal loadout and adapt to the rack in front of you. Working off percentages? Get your numbers from the one-rep max calculator first.

Common questions

Why does the breakdown only show one side?+

Because that is how you load a bar. Mirror the same plates on the other side and the total works out to the bar plus double the per-side weight.

My gym has no 2.5 lb plates. Now what?+

Load the closest weight below your target and take an extra rep instead. The calculator already shows the closest loadable total, so you know exactly how far off you are.

Do collars count toward the weight?+

Spring clips are light enough to ignore. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each — if you train with those, add 5 kg to the bar weight before you calculate.

What does a standard bar weigh?+

A men's Olympic bar is 45 lb (20 kg); a women's bar is 35 lb (15 kg). Specialty bars vary wildly — check the label, or weigh it once and write it down.

The bar is loaded. What's the plan?

Knowing the weight is the easy part. The 12-week program tells you which lifts, which days, and how to progress them for your sport.
